Discuss the Percuss(ion)

Though Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov just once set foot in Spain — and not for long — he left us with the strikingly Iberian Capriccio espagnol. While he desired it to “glitter with dazzling orchestral color” (and how it does), let’s not forget the percussion!

How does one percuss a Capriccio espagnol?

1 bass drum
1 snare drum
1 tambourine
1 triangle
1 pr. cymbals

And let’s not forget: castanets!

Pique your percussatory palate with this video of a German orchestra playing Spanish music by a Russian composer.

Then, get your tix for the real deal at the Seattle Symphony tomorrow at 8pm and Sunday at 2. The Spanish-born, tried-and-true Jesús López-Cobos conducts. Viva!
